Frozen products have been a lifesaver for me, and in this post, I’ll discuss the top choices that perfectly align with a keto and low-carb lifestyle. I used many frozen goods for my weekly meal prep and if I need to combine a meal in hurry.
Frozen foods are really convenient for these main reasons:
- Long Shelf Life: Frozen foods have a much longer shelf life compared to fresh products. They can be stored in the freezer for several months, which reduces the need for frequent grocery shopping and helps minimize food waste.
- Ready-to-Use: Many frozen foods, such as pre-cut vegetable or fruit, are ready to use, which saves time on preparation.
- Nutrient Retention: Freezing food at its peak freshness helps retain nutrients and flavors.
The Best Keto Low-carb Frozen Products
To ensure your frozen selection remains keto-friendly, be vigilant about inspecting labels for any additives that don’t align with the keto diet. Opting for products with minimal extras allows you to relish the convenience of frozen foods while staying true to your ketogenic goals.
You can find frozen products in every supermarkets, even if some chains may have different options.
Read in detail:
Frozen Veggies
Frozen vegetables are incredibly convenient as they come pre-cut and ready for cooking. Most frozen veggies are keto-friendly, because they don’t contain any additional ingredients.
- Edamame
- Pumpkin
- Grilled Veggies
- Broccoli and Cauliflower rice
- Broccoli
- Avocado
- Spinach
- Sprouts
- Onions
- Lemon
Frozen Fish
Fish is one of the best keto frozen products to buy. Since the fish is frozen immediately after the catch, it keeps almost all its nutrients.
Without extra ingredients, all the frozen fish is suitable for a keto diet.
- Salmon
- Pangasius
- Codfish
- Shrimps
- Tuna steaks
- Seafoods
Frozen Meat
In some supermarkets you can find 100% frozen meat without any additional ingredient.
This is the case for the brand “The Meat Lovers”, available at Jumbo, a brand that has a lot of frozen meat options.
There is a lot of choice, such as filet mignon steak, ribeye, entrecote, mixed grill, bavette, etc,… The products are 100% meat, so nothing is processed.
At Dirk you can find the brand “Portion Frost” and frozen chichen.
Frozen Berries
Frozen berries are a convenient option, especially for making smoothies without letting fresh produce go to waste. However, I personally tend to avoid frozen berries because of concerns about potential Hepatitis contamination.
The Best Low-carb Frozen Products
The following products are not considered keto-friendly due to their inclusion of small quantities of flour or other ingredients that are not suitable for the ketogenic diet. However, given their relatively low carbohydrate content, they may still be suitable for a low-carb diet.
Iglo Fish Cousine low-carb Meals
“Iglo Fish Cousine” line is not that bad. Low-carb and with good ingredients, it can also suit a keto and high protein diet, with moderation.
Iglo Oven
The best Iglo Oven is the fish with flax seeds. 10 gr carbs per 100 gr.
Iglo Spinach with Alpro, Cream, or Boursin
Frozen spinach blocks are a convenient and quick option (plus, no more worrying about spinach going bad in your fridge). I particularly recommend the version by Iglo, which includes a small amount of corn flour but boasts a Nutriscore A and minimal carbs, making it a great fit for a low-carb diet.
Processed Meat
In most supermarkets, you’ll find a wide array of processed meats. Even in small quantities, many of these meats contain flour. To make low-carb choices, it’s crucial to scrutinise the labels, selecting products with fewer additives and lower carb content.
For instance, the typical Dutch frikandel contains 7 grams of carbs per 100 grams, making it a relatively low-carb option suitable for a keto diet in moderation.
Additionally, their Nutriscore is often rated as D, indicating that this product should be consumed sporadically.
It’s important to recognize that processed meats, including frikandel and hamburgers, may not be the healthiest choice, as evidenced by their Nutriscore rating.
