Keto in the Azores

Date
Aug, 16, 2024

I visited the Azores in June 2024, and compared to other trips I’ve taken, it was quite challenging to stick to a keto diet here.

I stayed on São Miguel Island, in a small village that was conveniently located for exploring the entire island. However, I found that the selection of restaurants and keto-friendly products was quite limited.

But don’t worry—eating keto in the Azores is still possible, and with my tips, it can be even easier!

Where to Eat Keto in the Azores

In the Azores, you have a few options for sticking to a keto diet:

  1. Restaurants: You can enjoy dishes based on meat and fish. However, if you’re staying in a small village, your options may be limited. I stayed in a small rural village, and there weren’t many restaurants to choose from.
  2. Cooking Your Own Food: This is a cheaper and more flexible option, especially if your accommodation has a kitchen. Even without a kitchen, you can still eat keto by mixing and matching no-cook foods such as olives, cooked meats, fish, cheese, and nuts.

Notice: Unfortunately, delivery services like Just Eat or Uber Eats are not available in the Azores.

Since I was staying in a small village with limited restaurant options, I often found myself out in nature, hiking all day. It was challenging to find a restaurant with keto options when it was time for lunch.

Mostly, I encountered food trucks that served only burgers and fries. Argh!

Luckily, my accommodation had a kitchen, so I could prepare my own meals. I would cook eggs, cut up veggies, and add cheese, olives, or whatever keto-friendly ingredients I could find. The local supermarkets even had cooked meats like pork and roasted chicken! If you’re planning to pack a lunch, I recommend bringing it with you to ensure you have keto options on hand.box – but don’t worry, all the supermarkets sell them!

In particular, the fish here is fantastic! If you are staying in an accommodation with separate kitchen, and you know how to cook your fish, highly recommend preparing it yourself.

  3. Buy keto products at the local supermarket and serve them for breakfast.

If you are visiting Sao Miguel, is worth a visit to Da Silva Pastelaria, they make keto bread and other products – to be sure they have products when you are visiting you can message them via FB.

Keto Products in Azores Supermarkets

Every supermarket has the basic products, such as:

Cheese, Azorean fish is great
Lot of choice of fish and meat
Lunchmeat

Don’t forget to try the amazing Azorean cheese. The most awarded is Sao Miguel cheese.

In the biggest chains, such as Continente and Pingo, you will also find High-protein, low-carb and sugar-free products, for example from Prozis.

In conclusion, the Azores has a lot of keto food to offer, but it’s easier if you cook/prepare it yourself.
If you are staying in or nearby a big city, you can find brasseries and fish restaurants.
