I will review here the new products from Muscle Meat: Protein Ice cream.
You can buy it now at Jumbo, available in 2 flavors: Madagascar Vanilla and Chocolate.
Taste & Texture
The first thing that impressed me was the texture. Unlike many protein ice creams that can feel airy, bubbly, or inconsistent, these are genuinely dense and creamy.
They really deliver that mouthfeel of traditional ice cream.
The taste was equally surprising.
The Madagascar Vanilla flavor has an authentic and intense vanilla taste that feels very close to regular premium vanilla ice cream. It’s rich, flavorful, and genuinely enjoyable.
The Chocolate flavor is just as impressive. As you can tell from its deep brown color, it tastes very similar to real chocolate ice cream. The quality of the chocolate seems excellent, reminding me of the dark chocolate notes you find in authentic Italian gelato.
Having tried almost every protein ice cream available in the Netherlands, I can confidently say that these two are currently my favorites. In terms of both taste and texture, they set a new standard for the category.

Nutritional Values
Each tube is 350 gr.
Per 100 gr:
Madagascar Vanilla: 116 kcal, 21 g carbs, 1,5 g fat, 11,4 g protein
Chocolate: 116 kcal, 21 g carbs, 1,7 g fat, 11,4 g protein

Compared to the 2 biggest competitors:
Oppo High protein Chocolate Brownie per 100 gr: 156 kcal, 15 g carbs, 5 g fat, 10 g protein
Albert Heijn Protein Chocolate per 100 gr: 170 kcal, 14 g carbs, 4.8 g fat, 11 g protein
Gelatelli Creamy Chocolate per 100 gr: 111 calories, 17,3 gr carbs, 3 gr fat, 8,4 gr protein.
Muscle Meat Protein Chocolate: 116 kcal, 21 g carbs, 1,7 g fat, 11,4 g protein
Nutritionally, Muscle Meat Protein Ice Cream performs very well. It contains slightly more protein and less fat than Oppo, Albert Heijn, and Gelatelli. The carb content is a bit higher, but calories remain competitive—only slightly higher than Gelatelli, while Oppo and Albert Heijn are higher in calories.
Vanilla and Chocolate recipes are about 85–90% identical. The biggest difference is that the vanilla contains Inulin and egg yolk.
The only downside for me is the use of maltitol. Even though the recipe also contains erythritol, I’ve never been a big fan of maltitol due to its higher glycemic impact and potential digestive effects.
That said, it’s probably one of the reasons why the texture is so close to real ice cream, so I can understand the formulation choice.
I like that no sugar is added.
Yay or Nay?
For me, this is a big YES!
I can honestly say that, in terms of both formulation and taste, Muscle Meat Protein Ice Cream is the closest a protein ice cream has come to real gelato. The texture is dense and creamy, while the flavors taste authentic rather than artificially sweet.
I also appreciate that one of the flavors is Vanilla. Surprisingly, vanilla protein ice cream is not that common in the Netherlands, and this Madagascar Vanilla version is particularly well executed, with a rich and genuine vanilla taste.
Despite my reservations about the use of maltitol, the overall product quality is excellent.
If you’re looking for a high-protein ice cream that actually feels like eating real ice cream, this is currently one of the best options I’ve tried.
