Keto & low-carb Breakfast in Florence
My suggestion for a keto breakfast is to search for a hotel or accommodation that serves this option.
Florence is very turistic, and you can easily find places serving international breakfast.
If you just want to grab a quick coffee for breakfast, I suggest you any bar or Starbucks: stick to black coffee, cold or hot, and have a splash of low-carb milk, such as almond.
Where to Eat Keto & low-carb in Florence
All the restaurants in Florence have keto and low-carb options.
My biggest advice is search for any osteria. An osteria is a cheap restaurant where menu tend to be simple, with the emphasis on local specialities such as pasta and grilled meat or fish.
Stick to meat and fish recipes and veggies. The great thing of Italian food is that recipes are simple, and flavored with healthy fats and veggies, resulting in keto-friendly meals.
Florence is full of options but be mindful: for popular restaurants you may find a long queue.
Places that I recommend in Florence
I would like to recommend these 2 places that I tried and loved – they were not popular at the time of my visit so we could easily find a table for 2.
OSTERIA DELL’OSSO
We stayed 3 nights in Florence and we had dinner twice at Osteria dell’Osso.
Dining here was special. The place is small and cosy, and the staff it’s very kind and the food is amazing.
Here are the dishes we tried and we suggest, to pair with a glass of Chianti wine:
- Formaggi Misti Miele E Noci (Mix cheese with honey and nuts), leave the honey, or try some
- Bistecca Alla Fiorentina (Florentine Steak)
- Filetto Alla Grillia (Grillet Beaf Filet)
- Tagliata Di Manzo Con Rucola E Grana (Sliced Entrecote With Rocket And Grana Cheese)
OSTARIA DEI CENTO POVERI
We had lunch at Ostaria dei cento poveri. This restaurant is big but the service was quite fast.
They have a fixed menu but you can also order a la carte, the easier way to mix & match your keto and low-carb meal.
Here are the options that I suggest, to pair with their vino della casa (house wine):
- Buffalo mozzarella and tomatoes
- Platter of Tuscan cold cuts and cheese
- Bistecca Fiorentina (Florentine steak)
- Orata alla griglia (grilled seabream)
- Grilled cheese
Keto Low carb Must-try in Florence
These 3 dishes are typical of Florence cousine and they are keto-friendly.
BISTECCA ALLA FIORENTINA
Bistecca alla fiorentina (Florentine steak) is the most popular dish in Florence. It is loin steak on the bone cooked on a grill until rare (50 °C).
LAMPREDOTTO
Lampredotto is made with one of the four stomachs of cattle (abomasum) that is first meticulously washed and then cooked in boiling water with tomatoes, onion, and spices.
It can be also served in between a sandwich so ask first how it is served.
TRIPPA ALLA FIORENTINA
Trippa alla Fiorentina, another typical Florentine second course. It is prepared by slicing the tripe, well washed, into strips and adding it to a sauté of chopped onions, carrots and celery.
Sugar-free Ice cream in Florence
Gelato is a must in Italy. At Le botteghe di Leonardo you can find sugar-free gelato.
Also vegan sugar-free is available.
Supermarkets with keto options in Florence
If you want to purchase some food and eat like locals try to find 1 hour to visit a big supermarket.
I suggest the chain Esselunga. Here I found many many keto foods, and even high-protein goods.
Best keto products available here:
- Cheese
- Cold cuts, such as salsiccia
- Mozzarella di bufala
